A lot. I tried to express extreme appreciation, while also detailing the thought process I've been following tonight. This blog popped up in a google search and helped me so much. I don't know if the blog is current or if this comment will even be read (too bad my other won't be), but I just wanted to say, "Thank you" for writing a "chin up" post. I really, really needed it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28070080.post-48963987977713768052011-02-20T04:33:55.359-05:002011-02-20T04:33:55.359-05:00great advice - I am writing from Australia and it...great advice - I am writing from Australia and its a big help!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28070080.post-16383754290422789832011-01-29T23:32:16.305-05:002011-01-29T23:32:16.305-05:00Thank you so much for posting this. What do you spend most of your time doing? Do you get to be involved in most of the processes? (for example choosing a cover design and publicity?) I've been told the pay is quite low but that doesn’t really bother me as long as I’m happy in the job at the end. Please reply and Thanks for the insightful post!
Much loveAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28070080.post-230181538441359142010-01-14T19:25:26.494-05:002010-01-14T19:25:26.494-05:00Is it terribly competitive to find a job in publis...Is it terribly competitive to find a job in publishing? I worked as a journalist and am just now trying to figure out how to make the shift. Does publishing suffer from some of the same abysmal problems newspapers are going through? Offer your service for free, show them what they're missing, and learn as much as you can while you're there. Even if you don't get hired at the place you're interning, it's a great bit of experience to put on your resume.
By the way: hi TS, my Beddingfield buddy. You have great advice here, and say it much better than I did in one of my original posts way back at the beginning of my own blog.

I also got a master's, though it was in children's literature and not publishing. I'd already worked my way through college and beyond in other parts of the publishing industry (as an editor); I just wanted to get into children's, so for me it was the right choice.

It's funny how different each of our paths have been, yet we've all arrived (relatively at least) at jobs where we can be passionate about children's books.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28070080.post-31021859321798646522007-04-04T14:22:00.000-04:002007-04-04T14:22:00.000-04:00This is wonderful and SO helpful! I don't know if I have much to add, but I will say that when I'm hiring an assistant, what I'm looking for is a resume that shows a committment to books specifically, and if it doesn't have that, then you need a kick-ass cover letter than explains why, and conveys a passion for books.

Also, editor Cheryl Klein had a great post a while back about how to be an editor here.alvinalinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04503984086482905226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28070080.post-47386360843649381872007-04-04T11:25:00.000-04:002007-04-04T11:25:00.000-04:00Great post and good luck with your new blog. You ...Great post and good luck with your new blog. You are so right about the powers of networking and putting oneself out there. Because I provided a manuscript critique for a publisher, I was recently offered an editorial project. A one-time, part-time gig. Since I've been focusing on my own writing, I never thought I would be an editor. A lot of this job hunting advice (esp. Don't despair!) really applies for writers, too, perhaps more so, since writers are constantly facing rejection, even after they have been published.
